What is a certification audit?

Explained simply and transparently

A certification audit is an independent review that confirms whether a company meets the requirements of a certification standard (CONFICERT Brand). The process is clear, organized, and follows rules defined from the beginning.

Step-by-Step Certification Process

1. Certification Request and Quote

The process begins with an application

The company (operator) applies for certification to the Certification Body (CB) and provides basic information: who they are, where they operate, what product or service they offer, which Certificaction Brands they want to certify, etc. With this, the CB evaluates whether it is possible to start the certification process.

2. Preparation

Everything is planned before the audit

Once the process is approved:

A certification contract is signed, defining rights, obligations, and impartiality rules
The audit date is scheduled
The audit modality is agreed in advance (on-site / in situ, remote, assisted, or combined)
A qualified auditor is assigned
An audit plan is issued, describing the scope, methodology, and how the audit will be conducted according to the agreed modality.

3. Audit

A structured and professional review

The audit is conducted according to the agreed plan and modality. During the audit, the auditor:

Reviews documentation and records
Evaluates key processes and controls
Interviews relevant staff

At the end, the auditor communicates the findings, including observations and any detected non-conformities (NCs).

4. Corrective Actions (if needed)

Resolving any issues found

If non-conformities (NCs) are identified:

The operator submits a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) explaining how the issues will be addressed
A deadline is given to implement the corrective actions and provide evidence
The auditor reviews and verifies that the NCs have been properly resolved

5. Independent Review

A second check for fairness

A technical reviewer analyzes the entire certification process and verifies that the audit was conducted correctly and impartially.

6. Final Decision and Certificate Issuance (if applicable)

Clear decision and certification

The decision-maker (a second CB auditor, different from the one who conducted the audit) reviews the complete file and decides:

If everything is compliant and the operator’s final compliance percentage is 100%, the official certificate is issued, valid for 1 year.
If not all requirements are met and the final compliance percentage is below 100%, no certificate is issued.

Certificate Renewal

To maintain certification, the operator must request renewal before the current certificate expires.

Renewal window: 120 days before and 120 days after expiration
